As part of going through the tutorial, I even took part in a 5 vs 5 training skirmish, and won second place on the winning side! Woot! The actual battlefield gameplay is suitably chaotic and intense, with masses of troops clashing over control points. The tutorial does a pretty good job of explaining the basic commands though: it takes some getting used to, but it’s not ridiculously overwhelming. So on top of learning how to move and fight with your own character, you also need to learn how to move and command your troops. The units earn experience too, just like they do in Total War, so they’re not just throwaways. The game starts you off with some basic units such as infantry, pikemen, archers and serfs, but a glance at the unit tree tells me you can get some fancy mooks as your kingdom advances. Well, they ARE faceless minions, but there’s a large variety of them. And instead of just sending them into battle, your character is right there with them.Īnd when I say soldiers, I don’t mean a generic band of faceless minions. In other words, in Conqueror’s Blade, like in Total War, you recruit, train, and lead units of soldiers into battle. For those of you who are not familiar with Total War, it’s a popular series of strategy games that combines turn-based strategy and real-time-tactical control. What sets Conqueror’s Blade apart from any other hack-and-slash MMORPG is the fact that the game actually plays more like Total War. You get to allocate points to your character’s four attributes, and through the tutorial you get to choose your weapon of choice. It’s not super-detailed like Black Desert Online - then again, no one is - but it gets the job done. Sure, you get to create your character (“warlord”) and you know, the character customization isn’t half bad. One of the main reasons this game caught my eye, is that it’s not a traditional MMO. More of a first impression, but I do have a burning question about it that I’ll leave to the end. I only played this game for a couple of hours, so don’t think of this as a proper review. I’ve actually gone back and reinstalled old games I tried years ago like Conan Unchained and Skyforge, and one of the new ones I downloaded is today’s topic: Conqueror’s Blade. During this time of COVID-19 isolation, I have been poking at old and new games alike.
